The need for a data registry for Assisted Reproductive Technology in Africa is recognized by the International Committee Monitoring Assisted Reproductive Technology (ICMART). As a result, the African Network and Registry for ART (ANARA) is conceptualized as a new initiative in sub-Saharan Africa. Communication with ART centres and role players in Anglo-phone Africa is initiated by Professor Silke Dyer, ICMART Board member and chair of the South African Registry for ART.

Some data collection already exists in Franco-phone Africa and these activities are coordinated by Dr Jacques de Mouzon, ICMART Board member. The Latin American Registry for ART, led by Dr Fernando Zegers-Hochschild, provides hands-on assistance to the new regional registry and network.
